Hakima Midwifery is happy to add in-home lactation consultations to its list of services. Breastfeeding is natural, but that doesn't always mean easy. If you are finding it hard to settle into your breastfeeding relationship, have questions prenatally that you would like addressed before the birth, urgent needs around engorgement, or just sore nipples, Shannon is now offering in-home lactation visits. She is an International Board Certified Lactation Consultant as of July 2010. Shannon combines her experience as a midwife, her training in holistic pediatrics, and her Lactation Consultant certification to support and help mothers and babies in their nursing relationship.

HAKIMA MIDWIFERY OFFERS THREE TYPES OF VISITS: PRENATAL
If you have questions about breastfeeding, or would like some tips on how to set yourself and your baby up for the most optimal breastfeeding experience, prenatally is the best time to ask. At this visit we will go over how birth practices can impact breastfeeding, the importance of the first hour after birth, and what to do in the event of a Cesarean Section. We will also discuss the basics including positioning, latch,and signs of newborn hunger. I will recommend some things to have on hand to ensure that breastfeeding goes smoothly. Then we will go over any concerns you may have. This visit lasts around two hours and costs $175
IN-HOME LACTATION VISITS
These visits can be scheduled whenever needed. There is no need to have met prenatally. Fussy baby, sore nipples, sudden onset of pain, questions about going back to work, introducing solids, all of these and more can be addressed with an in home lactation visit. These visits usually last about an hour and a half. A plan is usually given to new parents along with phone or in home follow ups. The initial visit is $175 with follow up visits costing $75.
SKYPE CONSULTATIONS
Although it is ideal to see a mother and baby in person, not everyone has access to lactation consultants. These visits are conducted over Skype, an on line video chat system, with you and your baby. They can also be a great way to have follow up visits. Skype consults cost $100.
Some insurance companies, and most health savings accounts, reimburse for lactation visits. I ask for payment at each visit, but will provide an insurance reimbursement form for you to submit to your insurance company. I accept cash, check or credit card. Don't hesitate to call for help. Breastfeeding is priceless.
