- Do you accept insurance ?
Yes, most insurances will reimburse for midwifery care. At this time I am not in network for any HMO's however. Sage Femme Birth Center also accepts MediCal.
- What happens in an emergency?
Midwives are trained in normal birth, so when something is abnormal it jumps out. I do everything to ensure that mom and baby are healthy and happy throughout the labor. I take mom's vital signs and monitor the baby's heart beat frequently. At every birth there is medical grade oxygen, suturing equipment, and anti-hemorrhagic medications. I am trained in adult CPR and neo-natal resuscitation. Of course in a true emergency I will call 911.
- Why 'Hakima Midwifery'?
Hakima is Arabic for wise woman. Wise woman is a term that has been synonymous with midwife in many cultures throughout the world. In the Arab world, hakima is also a term used for midwife. It is also a name given to me by the scholar Shaykh Salek bin Siddina of Mauritania.
- Is midwifery legal?
Midwifery laws are regulated by each state. Currently efforts are being made to legalize midwifery in states that currently don't permit the practice. You can see their website for more information [www.thebigpushformidwives.org]. In California, midwifery is a legal profession regulated by the California Medical Board.
- Do you offer water-births?
Yes, I offer and encourage the use of water for both labor and delivery if applicable.
